BOWLING
The HU bowling team traveled to Comstock Park (MI) over the weekend to compete in the third WHAC tournament of the year. The WHAC tournaments are all one-day events where teams bowl four traditional games and 16 baker games to make for a long eight-hour day of bowling. The Foresters had a good showing with the women finishing 2nd of 12 and the men claiming 5th of 13.
The HU women collected 6,570 pins over the course of the day for their runner-up finish. The Foresters played nearly even with the eventual winner Indiana Tech in baker play as it was the traditional games that did Shockey’s crew in. After posting a 3,603 through the first four games to Tech’s 3968, Huntington turned in a 2,967 in its 16 baker games to Tech’s 3,003.
Senior Abby Atkins led the Foresters by finishing in 10th individually with a 190.75 average. The JV team also posted a 2nd place finish on Saturday with a total score of 5,935.
“The women were solid this weekend,” noted Shockey. “It was whole team effort to get the good finish.”
On the men’s side, the Huntington varsity team recorded a score of 6,632 while the JV squad claimed their highest finish of the year, 4th, with 6,177 pins. In varsity action, the Foresters bowled a total of 3,865 for the team games and added 2,767 for the baker games. Senior Justin Coleman had a strong outing to finish 11th individually with a 210.50 average.
“The guys are coming along,” said Shockey. “We are struggling to put together a tournament where we are stringing strikes and making spares, but we are close to getting there.”
HU is off until the new year when they bowl in the Buckeye Baker Classic on January 12-13.
