WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The #RV Huntington women’s basketball team extended its win streak to seven with a 70-50 win over IU Southeast on day two of the Huntington University Classic. The Foresters are now 7-1 on the year.

The loss is IUSE’s first of the season as they drop to 4-1.

Senior Brooke Saylor was a handful for the visiting Grenadiers. The 5-11 forward may have been out-sized but anyone at Platt Arena would agree she definitely wasn’t out-played and rightfully earned a spot on the All-Classic Team.

Saylor finished the day with a career-high 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting while going 5-for-6 at the charity stripe. She also collected a game-best nine rebounds to go along with a game-high and career-tying five assists.

The Foresters looked a bit out of sync at both ends of the floor in the first half to find themselves down 31-25 at the midway point but they righted their wrong after break. Behind Saylor’s 15 second half points, Culler’s squad connected on 13 of their 22 field goal attempts while canning 18 of their 19 freebies. HU also locked down defensively to limit the Grenadiers to a mere four field goals in the final 20 minutes.

The combo was lethal for the visitors as their six-point advantage at intermission turned into a 20-point deficit by game’s end. The Grenadiers entered the weekend averaging 90 points but HU made sure that didn’t happen on their watch by limiting IUSE to just 30.8 percent shooting while forcing 18 miscues, ten of which were steals.

In addition to Saylor’s 25 points, Sarah Fryman added 16 points while Maddie Richie tossed in 11. As HU’s point guard for the weekend, Richer was the unsung hero. In addition to averaging ten points in Huntington’s two games, she also averaged 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals while committing just one turnover the entire weekend.

Kelsi Scott came off the bench to tally 18 points and seven rebounds for IU Southeast. Josie Hockman finished with 12 points as the Grenadiers only other double-digit scorer.

Culler and crew now turn their attention to league play. They open up Crossroads League action by hosting #4 Marian on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
