WOMEN’S SOCCER

It was a double overtime 0-0 stalemate Friday night under the lights at Turner Stadium. The tie is the Huntington women’s soccer team’s first of the season and came against a formidable opponent in #RV Taylor University (11-3-3, 4-3-1).

The Trojans entered the evening averaging nearly 2.5 goals per outing but on this given night, the Foresters joined an exclusive club to hold TU scoreless. HU became just the fourth team this year to shutout Taylor with the other three teams including #1 Spring Arbor, #17 Marian and then-ranked #RV Grace.

“Tonight we played beautiful soccer,” said Coach Burge. “It wasn’t perfect but we showed grit, intensity and possessed well. We had several very dangerous looks at the net and relied on a lights out performance by Autumn Demott in goal to keep a tough Taylor side at bay.”

Stingy defense has become commonplace in this friendly rivalry as three of the last five times these two teams have met have resulted in a 0-0 deadlock.

For the fourth time this season, Matea Knispel posted double digit shots to finish with 11 of her team’s 13 shots. TU finished with 18 shots and enjoyed a 13-6 advantage in corner kicks. HU’s Demott and TU’s Megan Williams were each credited with the shutout in goal.

Huntington moves to 4-11-1 on the year, 1-5-1 in league play. Burge’s crew has their work cut out for them as they host #1 Spring Arbor Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
