WOMEN’S GOLF
The HU women’s golf team finished fifth out of eight teams at the Saint Francis Invitational over the weekend. Sholund’s squad fired a program-record 640 for the tourney which included a 322 on Friday and a 318 on Saturday.
Huntington’s top three players finished within a stroke of each other. Alexandria Maris (77, 83) and Betsy Schroeder (82, 78) tied for 14th with a 160. Leah Thompson turned in a 161 (81, 80) for the 17th spot.
Megan Higgins wasn’t far behind in 20th with a 163 (82, 81) while Rachel Blauert rounded out the top five with a 165 (86, 79).
Other scores for HU included Sophie Frazier with a 196 (101, 95), Katie Springer with a 197 (95, 102) and Alayna Steely with a 207 (109, 98).
“I am really proud of these young ladies,” said Sholund. “We lowered the team 18-hole record each day and posted a new 36-hole record with this result.
“We have been working on our mental game, decision making and short game this fall and it is leading to better results. This will certainly help us with confidence heading into next week at The Players Club in Yorktown.”
Taylor claimed the title with a 612 followed by Indiana Wesleyan (618), Saint Francis (630), Olivet Nazarene (636), HU (640), Grace (660), Saint Francis B (663) and Mount Vernon (706).
The Players Club Invitational is October 5-6.
