MEN’S GOLF
The Huntington men’s golf team opened up its season on Labor Day with the Blue Raider Fall Kick Off hosted by Lindsey Wilson at The Pines. Behind Keith Mineer’s 145 (74, 71) for 15th place, the Foresters posted a 596 to finish fifth out of seven teams.
After shooting a 304 on Monday, HU fired an impressive 292 on Tuesday to move from sixth to fifth by the day’s end much to the liking of their skipper. “This is the best tournament we’ve had since I’ve been the coach.
“I was impressed with the team’s attitude and approach this week. We did an outstanding job with shutting down bad momentum and limiting mistakes,” said Sholund. “When we clean things up around the greens, we are making enough birdies to do some damage. I am excited about this start to the year!”
Logan De Maa fired a 148 (75, 73) to finish tied for 24th out of 50 golfers. Zakry Cummings was one stroke back at 149 (77, 72) for 29th. Andrew Weisheit turned in a 154 (78, 76) for 41st while David Beck carded a 176 (89, 87).
Lindsey Wilson claimed the title with a 548 followed by Campbellsville (551), Midway (566), Marian (572), HU (596), West Virginia Tech (597) and Oakland City (605).
The Foresters have a break for a few weeks before competing in the Battle at Blackthorn in South Bend on September 21-22.
