MEN’S SOCCER

The Forester men’s soccer team controlled the match from start to finish Wednesday afternoon at King Stadium to blank Calumet College of St. Joseph 5-0. Sophomore keeper Gabe Greenfield spent the majority of the afternoon in frame to pick up HU’s first clean sheet of the season.

Huntington gave up just four shots, only one of which was on target, while generating 23 shots of their own to make for a one-sided affair. Offense was by committee as four different Foresters found back netting which included the last two by Ben Arnold within a three-minute span late in the game.

The freshman midfielder made his first two collegiate goals look easy as he rocketed both past CCSJ keeper Roy Gean.

Coach Lawson is excited about his rookie’s play but not surprised. “His first goal was a banger and his second a clinical slot. It’s because of those kind of plays that we got him and why we’re so high on him.”

The first three goals came in the first period. Less than 12 minutes in, Matheus Louzada served a corner kick into the six that Jake Erlandson got a head on for the early 1-0 advantage.

Louzada would go on to log two more assists, setting up Ty Sproat for Huntington’s third goal in the 30th minute and then finding Arnold for his first score at the 69:35 mark.

Noah Fleming was also in the business of handing out dimes. He assisted Huntington’s second goal, a blast by Luke Unger, as well Arnold’s second.

“Matheus put his mark on the game – this time with assists,” said Lawson. “Fleming also came up big for us with a pair of assists. We had a lot of selfless players today who shared the ball so their teammates could find the back of the net.”

Lawson was also pleased with how his squad came ready to play. “We knew Calumet would be hungry but we put them under by creating chances right away.

“From our ability to get numbers in the box and our ability to possess, we did a lot of the little things well to get our reward with those three early goals that put the game out of reach rather quickly.”

The Crimson Wave is now 0-3 on the season while Huntington improves to 2-0. Next up for Lawson and crew is a trip to Indiana Tech on Monday for their first match on the road. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
