Important Reminder: Student Hiring & I-9 Requirements

To ensure federal compliance and avoid delays in paying student workers, please remember the following required steps when hiring a student employee:

  1. No student may begin working until:
  • The job offer has been accepted, and
  • The student has completed Section 1 of the Form I‑9 (on or before their first day of work), and
  • The student has scheduled an I‑9 document review appointment or knows to bring original documents on Day 1.
  1. Students must bring original identity and work-authorization documents from the Lists of Acceptable Documents.
    Copies, photos, or scans cannot be accepted.
  2. Section 2 of the I‑9 must be completed within three business days of the student’s first day of work.
  3. Supervisors should not allow work to begin if the student has not provided proof that the I‑9 process is underway.

Following these steps ensures students can be paid on time and keeps us compliant with federal law.
