WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Huntington women’s basketball team never trailed in a 79-48 trouncing of Grace College Wednesday night at the Manhattan Orthopaedic Capital Center. The win wraps up the regular season sweep over the Lancers.

Maggard and crew have won three of their last four league games to improve to 14-11 overall, 7-8 in league play. With three regular season games remaining, the Foresters are sitting fifth in the CL standings.

As a team, HU doubled up the Lancers in field goals by going 32-for-75 for 42.7 percent while holding Grace to 16 buckets at a clip of 25.4 percent. Behind six three-pointers from Kyndell Jochim, the guests drained 12 from deep accounting for 36 points, over 45 percent of their offensive production. Also noteworthy was how well Huntington shared the ball as twenty of their field goals were assisted with Gabi Melby’s seven dimes leading the way.

Jochim finished with a game-tying 18 points on a night when ten Foresters put points on the board. Joining her in double figures included Liv Raby with 13.  The 6-1 center also ripped down ten boards for the double double in addition to posting three assists and three blocks.

Huntington’s balanced attack saw Melby and Bailey Kelham each toss in nine. Addie Shank sparked her team off the bench with seven points, a game-best and career-high 13 rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

HU grew their advantage with each passing quarter, enjoying a 15-8 lead after the first quarter, heading into the locker room up 38-24 and then outscoring their hosts 41-24 in the final 20 minutes to make for the final  31-point disparity.

The win is Huntington’s eighth double-digit victory of the year which includes a 79-65 disposal of the Lancers back on January 8.

Bekah Marshall topped Grace with 18 points. Morganne Houk and Maddy Poynter each netted ten points.

The Foresters return to Platt Arena Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off with Spring Arbor.
