MEN’S SOCCER

The HU men’s soccer team battled their way to a 1-0 win over Saint Francis Wednesday night under the lights at King Stadium. The Foresters have pieced together six straight wins to improve to 9-2-1 on the season. Three games into league play, Coach Potter’s crew is the only squad with an undefeated CL record at 3-0.

The emotion inside the stadium was unmistakable with both teams laying it all on the line. Defense reigned supreme with the evening’s only goal coming five minutes into the second half.

Alberto Guerrero Gon couldn’t have scripted his first goal in Forester green any better. The sophomore transfer got his head on a ball sent into the box from Matheus Menegueli at midfield on a restart. Guerrero’s header skipped over the USF keeper into back netting for a highlight-reel type of play.

The Cougars ratcheted up the intensity, creating several dangerous situations over the final 40 minutes which included a laser that Dan Pellegrine acrobatically deflected out of bounds five minutes after HU scored and another USF blast that bounced off the post with 20 minutes remaining. As it turned out, Saint Francis outshot their hosts 11-7 but Pellegrine and his backline kept them out of the net to preserve the shutout.

The clean sheet is Huntington’s sixth of the year with Pellegrine collecting two saves on the night. Over the last decade, these two squads have gone to battle 14 times with HU enjoying an 8-2-4 record over the Cougars.

The Foresters will look to defend their home turf again on Saturday when they host #RV Spring Arbor at 7:00 p.m. as part of the homecoming festivities.
