MEN’S SOCCER
The HU men’s soccer team successfully defended their home turf by slipping past Lawrence Tech 1-0 Saturday afternoon at King Stadium.
The Foresters’ golden opportunity came seven minutes into the second half. After a scuffle for the ball at midfield that the hosts came up with, Clay Wieringa crossed a ball into the box that found the head of Ryo Aihara who made sure he directed it back netting for what eventually proved the game-winner.
The Blue Devils responded by ratcheting up their intensity to create several dangerous situations but each time HU’s defense was up for the challenge. By the final horn, Huntington had generated 12 shots to LTU’s six with all but one of the guests’ shots coming after HU’s goal.
Dan Pellegrine stood tall in frame to earn the shutout. The senior keeper finished with three saves. HU has collected back-to-back 1-0 wins with four clean sheets to their name so far this season.
Over the last decade, these two squads have done battle nine times, with Huntington posting six wins. With today’s victory, the Foresters improve to 5-2-1. HU is back action on Wednesday to host Trinity Christian at 6:00 p.m.
