WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Forester women’s soccer team picked up their second straight shutout of the season by blanking IU South Bend 3-0 Wednesday night at King Stadium.

Huntington needed just over :30 seconds to establish a lead that would never be challenged thanks to the tag team effort of Sophie Shepherd and Jianna Simons. Simons outran two defenders to catch up to Shepherd’s pass and the rest, as they say, was history as the sophomore from Doylestown (Pa.) buried a shot far post for the early 1-0 advantage.

Fourteen minutes later, Ellie Cirrincione, best known for her gritty defense, chipped one in off a corner kick to give her team a little breathing room. Shepherd then put the finishing touches on the clean sheet by winning a fifty-fifty ball with the IUSB keeper and then sending it side netting to blow the game wide open just 15 minutes into the second half.

Huntington surrendered a mere two shots on the night while at the other end of the pitch erupted for 17 shots, nine of which were on target.  Ireland Aerni spent all but ten minutes in goal to earn the shutout, collecting one save along the way.

Since these two teams started playing each other in 2021, HU has enjoyed the upper hand with a 3-0-1 record against the Titans (0-1). The Foresters (2-1) are back in action on Friday to host Oakland City at 7:00 p.m.
