WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Playing in the friendly confines of Platt Arena, the Huntington women’s basketball team shot their way to a 79-61 win over Goshen. The Foresters knocked down a program-tying 16 three-pointers at a clip of 39.0 percent to get back in the win column after four straight losses.
It was a trio of threes by Emily Seboe in a 60-second span in the second quarter that not only gave her team a permanent lead but pulled Goshen out of their signature zone. Seboe’s hot hand fueled Huntington’s turnaround.
Down 26-18 early in the second, the Foresters went off for 24 points, which included six triples in six minutes, while limiting GC to just six to skirt in front 42-32. The Maple Leafs finished the half with the last four points for a 42-36 separation at the midway point with HU having scored 28 points in the second quarter.
The guests pulled with four twice in the third with the last a 49-45 disparity at the 5:11 mark. There was no panic by Maggard and crew as they went right back to work. Kelham, who kept Goshen guessing all day, rattled off the next three points after which Kyndell Jochim and Gabi Melby each dropped one in from downtown to up the lead back to double digits at 58-47.
Down by ten, 61-51, heading into the final ten minutes, Goshen made one final push to get back in it by scoring the first four points of the fourth quarter to make for a two possession game at 61-55. But Seboe drained her fourth three of the afternoon on the next trip down the court to put the kibosh any sort of late-game rally the Maple Leafs were scheming.
The Foresters spent the remainer of the contest pulling away from their visitors to the tune of a 19-point win by the final horn.
Seboe posted big numbers across the board which included 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block. When Kelham wasn’t knocking down one of her five threes, she was taking the ball to the rim to finish with a game-high 22 points. Melby was one assist away from a double double having tossed in 19 points while dishing out nine dimes.
The trio combined to drain 12 of HU’s 16 triples. Kyndell Jochim sank a pair on her way to scoring eight points off the bench while Annaka Nelson and Peyton Hartsough each nailed one from deep to account for the other two threes.
Syanne Mohamed led Goshen with 13 points while Montasia McAllister and Zion Neat each chipped in ten. Kyla Foster ripped down nine boards, four on the offensive glass, to claim game-high rebounding honors.
Both teams came into the day with a 3-5 CL record to share a piece of fifth in the league standings. With today’s win, Huntington improves to 10-9 overall which includes a 4-5 CL record to remain in fifth while Goshen drops their ninth straight to move to 8-11 overall, 3-6 in the conference.
The Foresters are 8-3 at home this season. They return to Platt Arena to start second round action of league play next Saturday when they host #2 IWU at 1:00 p.m.
