Playing in their last regular season series at Forest Glen Monday afternoon, the Forester baseball team took care of business with a pair of wins, 6-5, 7-1, against Goshen (9-35, 5-27).

GC got off to a hot start in game one with two of their first three batters touching home right away. It took HU a few frames to get going. Max Moser knocked in his team’s first run with a sac fly in the second. Ian McCutcheon tied things up in the third with another sac fly after which Sebastian Kuhns found a gap in left field for an RBI-single that put his team on top.

The Maple Leafs kept the pressure on by plating three runs in the fifth for the 5-3 go ahead. Matt Wolff got one back with a solo shot in the home half of the fifth and then HU used their quickness but more importantly got the help they needed from the Goshen mound in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. Five walks and two stolen bases set the stage for the hosts, who went hitless in the frame, to score twice on a pair of wild pitches.

After starting pitcher Grant Simmons tossed the first five frames, Max Meisner offered two innings of scoreless relief, during which he fanned four of the six batters he faced and gave up just one hit, to earn the win on the mound.

After the struggle that was the opener, the Foresters cruised to the win in the nightcap largely in part to HU’s pitching staff. Tyler Papenbrock threw the first three innings where he gave up three hits, one run and three walks while striking out two after which reliever Adam Oxley tossed the next three frames for the win, giving up just two hits and a walk while striking out five. Jordan Malott then wrapped things up with three strikeouts in the seventh.

While the guests poked in front 1-0 after their first at-bat, Malott knotted things up in the second with an RBI-double to right center. Huntington took the lead in the third on a McCutcheon sacrifice fly, his second of the series, followed by Langston Ginder’s run-scoring two-bagger a little later in the frame.

Satchell Wilson added three insurance runs in the fourth with a triple to the right side of the park with bases loaded after which he snuck home on a wild pitch to even further separate his team from the Maple Leafs.

With only a four-game road series over the weekend at Marian, today’s wins ensure at least a third place finish in the regular season standings for Frame and crew. HU’s overall records stands at 31-14 which includes a 23-9 CL record.
