MEN’S BASKETBALL

Even before the Crossroads League announced its postseason awards, senior Zach Goodline had put together a year to remember. Currently averaging 20.9 points, 5.0 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 steals, Goodline was named the league’s Player of the Year as voted on by the CL coaches.

Goodline’s consistent dominant play was the central reason behind Huntington’s 14-4 CL record and third-place finish in the conference. The 6-1 guard is third in the league in scoring and the league’s second best assist getter.

Goodline is the seventh Forester since 1994 to win Player of the Year honors and the first since Caleb Kennedy did it in 2012. Other Players of the Year include Doug Sheckler (2008), Alex Kock (2005, 2006, 2007), Adam Hill (2003), David Porter (2001, 2002) and Jeff Sheppard (1999).

Two other Foresters, sophomore Lane Sparks and junior Ben Humrichous, were honored by the conference as well.

Sparks, Goodline’s backcourt partner in crime, was named First Team All-League. The 6-3 guard can score at all levels making him nearly impossible to guard at times. He pours in 19.5 points per night, fourth in the league behind Goodline, to go along with ripping down 5.2 rebounds and swiping 1.6 steals per night. It’s his second year to be honored by the league having been named the CL Freshman of the Year and a member of the Third Team last winter.

For the second straight year, Humrichous garnered Second Team All-Conference praises. As one of the lankiest perimeter players in the CL, the 6-8 guard drops in a team-leading 1.9 three-pointers per outing. He does a little bit of everything for Alford by posting 12.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.8 blocks per night.

The Foresters (24-7), ranked 15th nationally, will have a seat at the NAIA National Tournament. Alford and crew will find out Thursday who they will play on March 7 in the opening round.
