WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Defense was on display Saturday afternoon at Platt Arena with the Huntington women’s basketball team coming out on top, 50-36, over Lawrence Tech (5-9). For both teams, they came in with 5-8 records and today’s contest was their last before Christmas.
The Foresters got the better end of the defensive battle as they held the Blue Devils 27 points below their season average. LTU’s leading scorers who combine to average 26 points, Kendall Fisher and Jade Faris, were held to just six points this afternoon. HU’s defense forced their guests into 21 turnovers which they converted into 24 points. Lawrence Tech managed just 13 field goals on the afternoon at a clip of 29.5 percent.
It’s the fewest points Huntington has allowed this season and the third time Maggard and crew have held a team to less than 50 points.
Offensively, the Foresters never trailed. While points were hard to come by for both teams, the hosts took a 23-13 lead into intermission. Emily Seboe hit three threes in the first 20 minutes on her way to posting 11 points in the half to come up just two points shy of matching Tech’s first half offensive output.
The 5-11 junior finished with a game-best 13 points. Gabi Melby added ten points, three assists and three steals. Konnor Gambrell tossed in nine points while Alli Vaughn collected a game-best eight rebounds.
HU enjoyed a double-digit advantage the entire second half with their largest lead of 18 points coming early in the fourth quarter before the 14-point spread by game’s end.
Maggie Long recorded ten points as the Blue Devils’ only double-digit scorer.
The series between these two teams started in 2020 with the Foresters claiming a 2-1 advantage in the win column. HU’s current record stands at 6-8 with their next outing slated for December 30 when they host Midway at 3:00 p.m.
