VOLLEYBALL
Mount Vernon (25-6, 10-6) has the Forester volleyball team’s number this fall having posted a three-set win (25-18, 25-20, 25-20) over their hosts Wednesday night in Platt Arena. With this W, the Cougars registered the regular season sweep over HU having handed Herber and crew a 3-0 loss at their place last month.
The loss drops Huntington to 14-16 overall which includes a 7-9 Crossroads League record. With two regular season matches remaining, the Foresters are currently tied with Saint Francis for sixth place in the CL standings.
MVNU’s offense proved more efficient on this given night, having logged a .315 hitting percentage to HU’s .108. Kortney Grimm was the exception for the Foresters by finishing with 12 kills on 26 swings for a .346 hitting percentage. Haley Kruse added seven kills while De’Janea Johnson and Maisyn Robrock each put down five. Kruse also registered four of her team’s eight aces.
Layla Meyer led her team defensively with 17 digs. Morgan Robrock finished with nine to go along with 36 assists and 1.5 blocks.
“I’m disappointed with our mentality tonight,” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “We let them go on a long run in each set that ultimately hurt us. When we would fight back, we had already dug ourselves in too deep of a hole.
“We got used on our block consistently and struggled to put the ball away against Mount Vernon’s strong back court defense.”
HU heads to Bethel on Friday and then wraps up the regular season with a trip to Grace on Saturday.
