WOMEN’S SOCCER

Playing at King Stadium for the first time this season, the Forester women’s soccer team gave up an early goal to IU Northwest that they were able to ride out for the 1-0 win over their hosts.

The series between these two squads stands at 1-1 with Huntington topping IU Northwest 2-0 last year.

“Like our game on Tuesday, we began tentative and didn’t play our capabilities,” said Coach David Lewis. “We played much better in the second half but still need to find the back of the net. Hopefully that will come on Wednesday.”

The game-winner came after seven minutes of play at the foot of Kelly Shaffer. The rest of the half came and went with the RedHawks forcing HU to spend quite a bit of time on defense but a chance to regroup at halftime saw the pendulum swing the other direction.

Huntington came out as the aggressors in the second frame to piece together several quality opportunities. After being outshot by three in the opening 45 minutes, Lewis’ crew fired off 11 shots while holding their visitors to just two after intermission. While seven of HU’s shots were on target in the second half, they couldn’t sneak any past the IUNW keeper.

Of Huntington’s 19 strikes on the day, freshmen Paige Weiss and Katie Hooley claimed four and three of them respectively while three other Foresters posted two shots apiece. Ireland Aerni tracked down eight saves in the losing effort.

Next up for HU (0-2-0) is another home match on Wednesday against IU South Bend at 4:00 p.m.
