Short and Vilensky Publish Comprehensive Functional Anatomy Textbooks for Occupational Therapy
Nate Short and Joel Vilensky began co-teaching anatomy and kinesiology eight years ago when the HU OTD program began, relying primarily on textbooks and resources from other disciplines. Realizing the need for a comprehensive OT-specific resource, they contracted with Books of Discovery, publisher of the popular Trail Guide to the Body series, to author a functional anatomy book geared specifically toward entry-level occupational therapy faculty and students. An additional author, Carlos Suarez-Quian, of Georgetown University, developed cadaver images, which are paired with illustrations to provide students with an in-depth understanding of underlying anatomy. Each chapter builds toward illustrations with muscle overlays on function, along with clinical application with links to clinical practice. The main text, entitled Functional Anatomy for Occupational Therapy, also includes a supplemental eTextbook, OT Guide to Goniometry and MMT, that features common musculoskeletal clinical assessments.
After four years of writing, revisions, photo shoots, and illustration development, the textbooks have been published and are now available at Books of Discovery: Manual Therapy Textbooks & Educational Resources.
Nate and Joel would like to thank the OTD program faculty and students as well as the HU community for their support for this project!
