The HU indoor track and field program kicked off its season at the Mastodon Opener hosted by Purdue Fort Wayne. Eight different Foresters ran qualifying marks in the meet. The day also saw the establishment of two new school records.

On the men’s side, Dylan Felger not only hit the A standard to win the 400 meters, his time of 48.25 also broke the school record by over two seconds.

Haile Stutzman was just as successful in the 5000 meters. In addition to automatically qualifying for nationals and bringing home a first place finish, he also shattered the HU 5K record by clocking in at 14:31.77 to claim the top spot in the record books by 13 seconds. Teammates Kent Yoder (14:50.93) and Elijah Chesterman (14:51.21) were next to cross the line with both times proving personal bests and meeting the A standard.

Reece Gibson also ran an impressive 5K to hit the provisional mark for nationals with his eighth-place finish in 15:10.39. Rounding out Huntington’s qualifying performances was Cameron Worsham who hit the B mark in the 60 meter hurdles. The senior ran a 8.29 in the prelims before taking second in the finals in 8.35.

Josiah Sovine brought home gold for Huntington by winning the 800 minutes in 1:59.60. Noah Bise rounded out HU’s top five finishes by claiming second in triple jump with a mark of 13.46 meters, a new PR.

The Forester women had several key performances which included Shelby Christman claiming an A standard in the 5000 meters with her second-place time of 17:56.52. Her time is the third fastest in Huntington history. She added a second top five finish by finishing fourth in the 800 meters in 2:24.91.

Sydney Lambert also checked the box for nationals by hitting the provisional mark in the mile. She ran a 5:11.85 to finish first while teammates Abigail Mays (5:17.91) and Emily Tedder (5:35.07) took fourth and fifth respectively.

Mays and Lambert also toed the line of the 800 meters. Mays finished second in 2:22.38 to earn the #6 spot in the HU record books while Lambert finished fifth in 2:25.60.

Aanyah Wright moved from ninth to fourth in the HU record books for her toss of 13.64 meters in the weight throw that also landed her second place at the meet.

The Foresters are off until 2022 when they compete in Trine’s Sean Brady Conditioner on January 15.
