MEN’S SOCCER

It was a defensive brawl Wednesday afternoon at King Stadium that ended in a 0-0 stalemate between the HU men’s  soccer team and the Trojans of Taylor University. The tie is a first for the Foresters this season and snaps a three-game win streak Lawson’s crew held over their neighbors to the south.

The draw moves Huntington to 6-4-1 overall, 1-0-1 in league play. The Trojans’ record stands at 6-2-1 which includes a 1-0-1 record in CL action.

While both teams battled for an advantage all afternoon, when the final buzzer sounded the stats were identical. Both squads finished with 11 shots, seven of which were on target, and each keeper finished with six saves. The only slight advantage was in corner kicks where Huntington posted six to TU’s four.

“Both teams brought the intensity today,” said Coach Russ Lawson. “I thought both sides had their moments but lacked final quality plus both keepers came up with some big saves.

“With our brand of soccer, we’re going to defend well. To get two clean sheets to start conference play is impressive. I’m proud of the boys for getting the job done defensively. Now we’ve got to find ways to get the ball in the attacking half.”

Today’s clean sheet is the Foresters’ sixth of the year and includes holding Spring Arbor scoreless on Saturday. HU hits the road on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with Mount Vernon.
