WOMEN’S SOCCER

The HU women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 stalemate with the Cornerstone Golden Eagles Saturday morning . The extra sessions saw both teams have an opportunity to clinch the win but impressive saves by both keepers forced a draw after a pair of OTs.

All the scoring action occurred within a three-minute span. The Foresters, despite being outshot 27-7 in regulation, scored first at the 65:27 mark thanks to a left-footed strike just outside the box by Reagan Sanderson. It’s Sanderson’s second goal in as many matches.

Cornerstone wasted little time countering as the equalizer came just over two minutes later when MacKenzie Kramer scored off a rebounded ball to force extra time. Huntington took three shots, two of which were on target, in the first overtime while holding their hosts shotless. The tables turned in the second OT as the Golden Eagles fired off seven shots, two on frame, without allowing any shot attempts.

Ireland Aerni finished with 12 saves on the day while CU keeper Hope Steenwyk posted four. The Foresters (2-0-1) wrap up the week having played three road games in a short span.

Lewis was impressed with his team’s effort and sang the praise of both keepers for stepping up to make big plays. “I was pleased with the effort we put forth today. Playing three times in five days is tough.

“The Cornerstone keeper made two great saves in the first overtime and Ireland made a quality save with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime. Sunday’s rest is welcomed!”

Huntington hits the road again on Tuesday to face Manchester at 4:00 p.m.
