MEN’S SOCCER
The Forester soccer team saved all its scoring for the final 30 minutes on their way to a 4-0 win over Siena Heights Tuesday afternoon at King Stadium. Lawson and crew are on a great trajectory as today’s W is the second straight over the Saints after last year’s 2-0 win that snapped a five-game win losing streak SHU held over HU.
After generating 13 shots in the opening 45 minutes with no pay-off, the Foresters finally got a lift from Higor Barbieri when he picked off a pass in the attacking half and eventually bent and curled a shot upper 90 just outside the 18 in the 59th minute for the game’s first goal.
Six minutes later, Barbieri found back netting again, but this time had help from Eric Ocock who got the edge on his defender to draw the keeper near post and then found him for the easy tip-in. The sophomore transfer already has four goals to his name.
Freshman Diego Romo claimed the first goal of his young career with just under 15 minutes remaining to put the game out of reach. It all started when he intercepted a ball at the top of the circle. The Goshen High School product was off to the races after that, eluding three defenders, to send one far post for a 3-0 Huntington lead.
Josh Whitney put the finishing touches on the match when he made good on a penalty kick with less than ten seconds remaining.
The Foresters generated 24 shots to their visitors’ six which included enjoying a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. HU also enjoyed a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Gabe Greenfield posted all four of Huntington’s saves to earn the clean sheet in goal.
“I thought we did a solid job of neutralizing Siena Height’s weapons,” said Coach Lawson. “Overall, I was also impressed with our players’ composure and response to a very physical and emotionally-charged game. It allowed us to stay true to our game and finally get the breakthrough we needed when Higor scored 15 minutes into the second half.”
HU (2-0) is back in action to host Michigan-Dearborn at noon on Saturday.
