BASEBALL

In a critical Crossroads League clash, the #RV HU baseball team’s late-game surge wasn’t enough to pick off #20 Taylor Saturday afternoon at Forest Glen Park. It took 11 innings for the Trojans (24-6) to finally post a 7-6 win and remain perfect in league play at 13-0.

With this loss, the Foresters drop to 15-6 overall, 8-5 in CL action.

After playing to a 3-3 stalemate in the opening regular-scheduled nine inning game, TU not only relied on timely hitting but also took advantage of two walks and a misplayed grounder to touch home four times in the top of the eleventh to surge ahead 7-3.

Huntington fired right back in their half of the frame to keep things interesting. After Max Moser reached on a dropped fly, pinch hitter Nick Rensberger launched one into right field to land runners on the corners. Langston Ginder and Ian McCutcheon each worked a base on balls with McCutcheon’s walk driving in a run. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Daniel Lichty and Satchell Wilson pulled the Foresters within one but unfortunately HU’s rally was cut short when McCutcheon, who was tagging up from first to second, was pegged with leaving base early on Wilson’s sac fly.

Walks also played a significant role in HU’s first three runs. The fourth saw Camden Dice double in Jarret Gray and Alex McCutcheon who had both drawn walks while Huntington’s tying run in the eighth started with Satchell Wilson reaching base on a walk before eventually coming around to score on an Alex McCutcheon RBI-ground out.

Dice tossed the first seven frames before Brent Turner came on in relief to be charged with the loss. In 4.0 innings of work, the senior southpaw gave up five hits, four runs and three walks while striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Foresters were up 5-1 in the fifth before rain forced the game to be postponed. Play will resume on Monday after which the two squads will square off for another doubleheader to wrap up the series.
