The Huntington baseball team scored two late runs to pick off #11 IU Southeast 3-2 Friday afternoon at the Koetter Sports Complex. With this W, the Foresters improve to 4-0 on the year and snap a six-game win streak the Grenadiers (5-7) held over them.
Down 2-1 after five, Huntington tapped into three of their six hits in the sixth to find home twice. Daniel Lichty’s shot off the wall landed him on second and brought in Ian McCutcheon, who opened the frame with a single, to knot things up at 2-2. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Owen Young, Lichty came around to score on Jarett Gray’s single into right for what proved the game-winner.
HU’s first run came in the third on Langston Ginder’s sacrifice fly.
After giving up two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first, Mason Shinabery went into lock-down mode to hold the Grenadiers scoreless through the next five innings before Brent Turner picked up the save by tossing the final frame. Shinabery’s win saw him give up eight hits and a walk while striking out five in six innings of work.
Huntington’s six hits came at the bat of six different Foresters with Lichty, Gray and Ginder each being credited with an RBI.
In the nightcap, the Foresters were up 4-1 in the fourth before rain suspended play. The two squads will finish the game before tomorrow’s doubleheader.
