WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The HU women’s basketball extended its win streak over Spring Arbor (4-5) to ten Wednesday evening at the McDonald Athletic Center by cruising past the Cougars 64-44.

The second and third  quarters served Huntington well. After trailing to SAU through the entire first quarter, Emily Seboe’s put back at the 6:49 mark of the second, gave the guests their first lead at 20-19. Culler’s crew used the rest of the stanza to build on that advantage for a 32-24 tilt by the break.

Seven different Foresters scored in the third quarter to the tune of 21 points while limiting Spring Arbor to just nine for a 53-33 difference heading into the final ten minutes. The two teams played even to close out the contest to make for the final 20-point disparity.

Seboe finished with a game-high 16 points as the Foresters’ only double-digit scorer. She also collected six rebounds and two assists. Sam Vaughn and Maddy Robrock each tallied eight points and six rebounds. Vaughn also passed out a game-best five assists. HU got seven points from Dazia Drake and Alexandria Bope.

As a team, Huntington committed 11 turnovers but countered that by forcing 18 Cougar blunders, ten by way of steals. The Foresters connected on 45.2 percent of their field goals (28-for-62) with all but ten of their buckets assisted.

Grace Shoobridge finished with 11 points to lead Spring Arbor. Anne Marie Wright added nine points. No other Cougar scored more than three points.

Because of strict COVID guidelines mandated by the Michigan governor limiting Spring Arbor’s ability to practice and compete, the Cougars made the difficult decision to pull out of the Crossroads League this year.  As such, tonight’s win does not figure into HU’s league record as they improve to 10-6 overall.

Huntington will make the short trip to Fort Wayne on Saturday to play Saint Francis at 1:00 p.m.
