MEN’S SOCCER
The HU men’s soccer team picked up where they left off last fall to kick off 2020 with a 2-0 win over Taylor at Turner Stadium. The Foresters, the two-time defending Crossroads League Champions, are coming off a 15-win season which proves the fourth most wins in program history.
Tonight not only marked opening day for Lawson and crew but also served as the league opener as they move to 1-0 overall, 1-0 in CL action. The loss leaves Taylor at 0-2 and still looking for their first goal of the season having lost to Brescia 2-0 on September 5.
Huntington controlled possession from the opening whistle with the stats to prove it. The Foresters fired 16 shots on frame to Taylor’s six. Overall shots favored the visitors 18-10.
Kyle Williams got his team on the board in the 28th minute just seconds after entering the contest. Hovering on the outside edge of the box, the junior forward pounced on a deflection to laser a shot far post to not only score HU’s first goal of the year but his first collegiate goal as well.
The lead would hold through halftime before Pablo Garcia doubled things up with his first goal as a Forester at the 62:05 mark when he shook lose to go 1-v-1 with the keeper to strike back netting left-footed.
Junior Blake Cooke was in net to notch the shutout. He finished with three saves on the night for his first collegiate win in goal.
The Foresters host Marian at King Stadium on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
