MEN’S GOLF

The Forester men’s golf team took fifth at the Battle at Blackthorn hosted by Bethel University at Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend by posting a 323 on Monday and a 325 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 648.

Freshman Mitchell Wilson topped Sholund’s crew by finishing 21st with an 18-over-par 162 (80-82). David Beck was one stroke back with a 163 (81-82). After a rough start to the invitational, Chance Bressler carded his team’s lowest round (75) on Tuesday to finish with a 165 good for 24th out of 38 golfers.

“Chance made all the appropriate adjustments after a tough first round,” said Coach Sholund. “He did a great job of leaving it behind him. He came out in round two with a better game plan and the round came together in the mid-round.

“He had it one under with four to go. He’s been putting himself in position for some very good scores. He’s gaining confidence and will learn to close those out the way he wants. That was one of the best one round turnarounds I’ve watched and it’s extra rewarding when it’s one of our guys. He set a great example for his teammates of how to keep competing and stay positive.”

Dillon McFaddin carded a 168 (82-86) while Colby Martin added a 171 (80-91) to round out Huntington’s scoring.

“We battled hard on a course that is difficult around the greens,” said Sholund. “As a team we missed shots in the wrong places too often and put too much pressure on our short game which was average this week.

“We will be focused on better decisions and learning where to be aggressive. Our guys work hard all the way through the round, and I like that. They can do a better job of competing around the greens and that begins at practice. I look forward to them stepping that up over the next couple of weeks as we prepare to go to Benton Harbor.”

Lewis captured the title with a 603 followed by Grace (605), IU Kokomo (617), Holy Cross (618), HU (648), Lewis B (654), Grace B (679) and Cornerstone (690).

HU is back at it On October 5 to compete in the Harbor Shores Intercollegiate.
