WOMEN’S GOLF
The Forester women’s golf team kicked off its fall season with a 5th place finish at their own tournament, Battle at Brookwood, on September 7-8. The invitational was held at HU’s home course, Brookwood Golf Club, in Fort Wayne.
Senior Alexandria Maris paced Huntington with a 163 (79-84) over the course of the two-day event to finish 14th out of 30 golfers. Danielle Tinsley fired an 85 both days for a 170 and 19th place finish.
Lexy Turpchinoff carded a career-best 172 (83-89) and Abby Sheehan rounded out Huntington’s scoring with a 177 (88-89). Katie Springer turned in a 94 and 86 to shoot 180 which proved a career-best.
“Katie Springer and Lexy Turpchinoff both had personal bests,” noted Coach Sholund. “They have both been working harder on their games and learning to focus on the right things. It’s always rewarding as a coach to see the fruits of a player’s effort.”
As a team, Sholund’s crew shot a 679 (335-344) for the tournament. Taylor won the team title by firing a 591 followed by Grace (621), Taylor B (633), Mount Vernon (670), HU (679) and Grace B (681).
“This team is young, they have a lot of talent and they work hard,” said Sholund. “It is easy to see what they are capable of. I’m sure our veterans will settle in and show more composure and our young players will get more comfortable and clean up the wasted shots.
“We have a two-day turnaround before competing at The Players Club so we need to be focused at practice and ready to work on some fundamental aspects to scoring.”
Next up for the Foresters is the Players Club Invitational in Yorktown on September 11-12.
