BASEBALL
The Huntington baseball team kicked off Crossroads League action on Saturday by topping Marian (10-8, 0-2) twice, 2-0, 4-2, at Logansport High School. With these wins, HU improves to 4-7 overall, 2-0 in league play.
Alex McCutcheon was a man among boys. The senior southpaw tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout to earn the Foresters’ first league win of the season. The only base poke he surrendered was a one-out single in the second, but he quickly righted his wrong by baiting the next batter into a double play. Only one Knight was left on base in the quick 75-minute affair.
McCutcheon’s teammates backed their ace at the plate by scoring right off the bat on Daniel Lichty’s RBI-single up the middle in the bottom of the first. It was Langston Ginder who motored his way home after reaching base on a dropped fly that proved the visitors’ only error of the day.
The Foresters added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth by stringing together three straight singles with Owen Young’s laser through the hole at short driving in run #2.
The nightcap was a bit more offensive in nature with HU taking advantage of a two-out rally in the third to grab a 2-0 lead. After Jarrett Gray worked a walk, Young launched one over the right field fence on a full count. It’s the junior transfer’s first dinger in Forester green.
A few quiet innings passed before the Knights answered with a pair of runs by piecing together an error, double and sacrifice fly. Huntington didn’t wait too long to counter.
It was another two-out rally for Frame’s crew – this time in the bottom of the seventh. Ginder and Lichty clocked back-to-back singles and then Gray brought them home on a shot to right to reclaim the lead at 4-2 that they rode out for the win.
Mason Shinabery gave up just five hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, and three walks while striking out four in seven innings of work to pick up the win on the mound. Camden Dice offered two frames of scoreless, hitless relief to claim the save.
Ginder and Satchell Wilson each logged two base pokes to account for half of their team’s hits.
The Foresters wrap up their series with Marian on Monday with a single nine at Logansport High School. Opening pitch is slated for 3:45 p.m.
