SOFTBALL

The Huntington softball team wrapped up their season-opening weekend series at Marilyn D. Sparks Park by topping St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 10-4 Saturday afternoon. With this win, the Foresters improve to 2-1 while the Pomeroys drop what was their first game of the spring.

HU got their bats going early to dominate the game and never look back. The Foresters clocked two out of the park to highlight their five-run second frame. Sophia Beachy was the first to send one long, a three-run blast, after Joelle Beals and Hannah Shoupe found their way on base via a single and walk respectively.

Kiera Stacy then smacked a two-run shot over the left field fence three batters later to cap off HU’s scoring in the second.

The Foresters had already scored three runs in the first to make for an 8-0 contest after Beachy and Stacy’s heavy bats. Jada Crofoot knocked in a pair on a double down the left field line and then made her way home on an error to open up HU’s scoring. It was the first of three base pokes by the junior first baseman.

The Pomeroys got one back in their half of the second and then scattered three more runs but it was too little too late as Huntington plated two more runs to keep their hosts at a healthy distance. Beachy pushed a run across in the third on an RBI-groundout after which Kennedy Krull drilled a shot to left center to drive in run number ten in the sixth.

Tiffany Price got the starting nod in the circle to pick up her first win in a Forester jersey. The Cincinnati Christian transfer tossed the first five frames and gave up five hits, three runs, two of which were earned, and a walk while striking out one.

In addition to Crofoot’s three hits, two of which were doubles, she also posted two runs and two RBI. Shoupe also logged three hits and scored twice as well as drawing two base on balls. Beachy added two hits, four RBI and two runs scored while Beals also collected a pair of hits and runs. As a team, the Foresters finished with 13 hits to SMWC’s seven.

Next up for Gower and crew is a trip to IU Southeast on Friday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader with the Grenadiers.
