A Letter from the Chief
Dear Huntington University Family,
February 26 is the conclusion of my first 100 days serving as your Chief of Campus Police and Safety. Although I have not met each of you personally, I want to thank you for your kindness and hospitality since I have come back home to Huntington University. I know safety is important to everyone in varying degrees. It is always my goal as Chief to lead a department that is characterized by transparency and a strong commitment to integrity. The operations of a police department often function in a manner that is not visible to the public. For this reason, I wanted to share with all of you some accomplishments we have celebrated and a vision for the future.
The Huntington University Police Department has:
– Hired 1 of 2 new police officers to better serve the campus community; the second is finishing the application process
– Implemented a “Digital Bluelight” on the Huntington University mobile application for instant access to an HUPD officer when needed
– Began creating policies and procedures to maintain Indiana and Clery compliance
– Updated the HUPD Mission Statement to better reflect our values and commitment
– Created the After Hours Unlock Form to streamline accessibility of campus facilities and resources during weekend hours
– Arrest of a known narcotics dealer, the seizure of 10 grams of schedule 1 narcotics, and the uncovering of a larger narcotics distribution ring in Huntington while assisting Huntington Police Department on an investigation
I am excited about the future of the Huntington University Police Department. In 2020 I will be attending three multi-day conferences and training to gain up-to-date campus safety knowledge and tactics. Additionally, I will be working closely with our staff at HU to secure public safety grants that will enable us to secure and utilize cutting-edge resources to keep you safe.
Finally, I want to reiterate that my door and inbox are always open. We are YOUR police department. If you have any concerns or ideas, please do not hesitate to contact me. Additionally, if you ever have any questions about how a situation was handled by one of our officers please contact me.
In Christ,
Chief Keirsh A. Cochran, MPA
