The HU baseball team suffered a 2-1 loss Friday afternoon to #22 IU Southeast in the first contest of a three-game series with the Grenadiers at the Koetter Sports Complex.

The loss drops Huntington to 1-2 while IUSE remains perfect on the season at 6-0.

The hosts scored once in the first and then again in the third, both on RBI-singles, to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Foresters’ bats were quiet through the first four frames. Owen Young finally logged his team’s first hit of the afternoon in the fifth, but it would be another two innings before HU strung together a few base pokes to find their way onto the scoreboard.

Jarret Gray got things started for Huntington in the seventh by drawing a base on balls after which he advanced to third on Owens’ double up the middle and then came around to score when Collin Landrum singled through the hole at second to cut the Grenadiers’ lead in half.

The Foresters left the bases loaded in the eighth but then went down quietly in a 1-2-3 ninth. HU finished with four hits on the day to IUSE’s seven.

Starting pitcher Alex McCutcheon took the loss for HU. He tossed the first 5.2 innings and gave up two runs, four hits, two in the first and the other two in the third, and a pair of walks while striking out six.

Frame and company are back in action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader with the Grenadiers.
