WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The #22 HU women’s basketball team wrapped up their time at the Puerto Rico Clasico with a convincing 90-57 win over the University of Puerto Rico Metropolitan Tuesday night at the Coliseo Mario Quijote Morales.

The Foresters needed a quarter to get their bearings as a physical UPRM squad took it to their visitors. The opening ten minutes included six ties and two lead changes with Huntington slipping in front 17-16 by the first break. The second quarter was a different story as HU came out as the aggressors to erupt for 32 points to blow the game wide open by intermission 49-30.

When all was said and done, Huntington scored on all but two possessions in the quarter with eight different Foresters putting points on the board. It was smooth sailing the rest of the way. Once HU stretched the lead to 20, it never slipped into the teens again and extended to as many as 37 before the final 33-point difference.

Despite facing their most physical opponent of the year, Culler’s crew posted their highest shooting percentage of the year by tearing up the nets at 61.4 percent (35-for-57). Sarah Fryman and Jade Clement spearheaded HU’s offense by combining to go 16-for-26 from the floor to score 22 and 20 points respectively. Clement was a dead eye from long range where she buried six of her eight treys.

Alexandria Bope added nine points while Erin Mohr and Cindy In’t Groen tossed in eight apiece.

Fryman finished with four assists and just as many steals in addition to tracking down seven boards, three of which were offensive, to share game-high rebounding honors with Sara Doi who did the same.

Defensively, the Foresters grabbed 14 steals with Mohr nabbing a career-best five. It’s the eighth time this year HU has logged double-digit steals.

Dorymar Cruz led the University of Puerto Rico Metropolitan with 13 points. Keylin Gonzalez added 11 points while Nigilyn Santana finished with ten.

With this win, the Foresters improve to 12-2 on the season. They are back in action on December 30 to host IU Northwest at 6:00 p.m.
