MEN’S SOCCER
Arguably one of the most dangerous duos in the Crossroads League struck again Wednesday night, this time at St. Vincent Field, to lift the HU men’s soccer team past Marian 1-0. The W stretches HU’s win streak to four over the Knights as they improve to 8-2-2 on the year, 2-0-1 in league play.
Junior Jake Erlandson and freshman Caleb Sexton teamed up again for the third straight contest to score what was the game’s only goal. Sexton served a ball into the box on a restart that Erlandson slammed home with his head just 19 minutes into the contest.
Erlandson, who entered the evening ranked 3rd nationally in game-winning goals with four, added another to his resume as five of his six goals this fall have been game-winners. For Sexton, it’s his fourth assist. He has also scored three times this year.
While HU found back netting just one, they were the aggressors throughout having created a plethora of opportunities as evidenced by finishing with 17 shots, ten of which were on goal. The Knights (6-5, 1-2) posted eight shots with five on frame. Corner kicks also favored the visitors 10-3.
“From the first whistle, I thought we set the tone with our play and aggressiveness,” said Coach Lawson. “Our ability to get after it and generate quality opportunities forcing several great saves was encouraging.
“We had a lot of impressive performances tonight. Jake was rock solid for us in the back while the leadership of our captains and upperclassmen was outstanding.”
Gabe Greenfield notched the shutout in net, his fourth of the season. He finished with four saves on the day.
The Foresters hit the road again on Saturday to play under the lights at Bethel at 7:00 p.m.
