Celebrate the Core Spring 2020
HU Staff and Faculty:
Let’s celebrate Huntington University’s liberal arts core, AGAIN! We have celebrated the core for the past three spring semesters by choosing a common theme to emphasize in various ways and various times in our courses (2017 theme: identity; 2018 theme: disagreement; 2019 theme: truth).
We need your help in choosing the theme for spring 2020. Click on this link to cast your votes
For those new to HU or in need of a refresher:
HU’s core curriculum emphasizes unity in diversity; an integration of knowledge, skills, and values into a coherent worldview. Celebrate the Core is a way of highlighting these emphases. Participating professors, instructors, and staff will emphasize the theme (chosen by faculty and staff) for one or more class periods, approaching it from their own academic discipline or co-curricular distinctive, thereby demonstrating to students how the same subject matter is dealt with from a variety of vantage points. Participation is voluntary.
Ideally, courses and other events will emphasize the theme during the first week or so of the spring semester, but if that is not possible, you are free to emphasize whenever it is best for you and your students (e.g. I will emphasize it near the end of the first week and the beginning of the second in my courses).
We also hope to have a couple of chapels dedicated to the theme as well as residence hall and library events that revolve around the chosen theme.
Keep in mind the following as you decide your level of participation:
– If you are unable to spend the entire first week on the agreed upon topic, you are still encouraged to participate for as long as you are able.
– If you need assistance in gathering material from your discipline on the chosen topic, please feel free to email David Alexander for help (dalexander@huntington.edu).
– If you do not teach any core courses you are encouraged to participate.
