BOWLING

The Huntington University bowling program opened up its season over the weekend at the Ball State Cardinal Classic with the 11th-ranked women claiming 7th and the men taking 9th. The tournament featured 40 baker games over the course of two days on a challenging oil pattern and lane surface.

On the women’s side, the field consisted of 12 teams with HU scoring 6,274 pins for a 156.85 per game average while the JV squad finished 4th out of four.

“Making spares was the key to success for the ladies but we struggled with the consistency needed to make shots that left us in positions for makeable spares,” said Coach Shockey. “The demanding condition of no air conditioning and a tough shot tested our patience.

“The ladies showed a togetherness and a grit that we will be able to build on and find more success as the season moves forward.”

The Forester men competed in a field of 16 team on the way to collecting 6,775 pins to finish with a 169.38 per game average.

“The guys found themselves in the same position as the ladies,” noted Shockey. “We struggled to make spares with the consistency needed to be competitive at the collegiate level.

“We certainly have things to work on, but the guys are committed to playing the lanes together as a team. This is the attitude that will lead us to success as the season goes.”

Shockey and crew are back in action on Saturday to compete in the first of four WHAC Jamborees.
