WOMEN’S SOCCER
It took two extra periods for Siena Heights (3-2-1) to eventually escape O’Laughlin Stadium with a 2-1 win over the HU women’s soccer team Saturday night under the lights. It was the second time this season the Foresters found themselves in OT.
SHU generated 12 shots in the first period with their last of the half finally finding back netting in the 40th minute. It seemed the 1-0 advantage might stick until Courtney McKown struck for her fourth goal of the year with ten minutes left in regulation to force OT. The sophomore midfielder beat her defender in a foot race to the ball to slip the equalizer past the keeper for the 1-1 stalemate.
McKown was the only one to post a shot in the first extra period to extend the match to a second OT where Erin Tyson struck for gold at the midway point to send her teammates into a frenzy of celebration.
Sophomore keeper Maddy Moan collected eight saves in the losing effort. After being outshot 12-1 in the opening half, HU upped the pressure substantially to finish the day with eight more shots to SHU’s 12.
Coach Lewis continues to be encouraged by what he sees from his crew. “This was a fun game to watch – I just would have preferred a better result.
“We keep getting close. Eventually we’ll claim some Ws. The quality of play is improving as is team confidence. It was a great team effort – not only on the field but also from the sidelines. They demonstrate a lot of heart.”
HU (3-5) has over a week’s break before opening up league play with a home match against Grace on September 25.
