WOMEN’S GOLF
The HU women’s golf team hosted its own tournament, Battle at Brookwood, to kick off the 2019 season. The field consisted of all Crossroads League foes with the Foresters shooting a 685 (338-347) to finish seventh.
“This was a good opportunity for us to compete against a very strong field,” noted Coach Sholund. “We learned a lot this week that we can focus on in practice.
“Our short game and long putting are what stood out this week as a need. Our tee ball stood out as a strength. Most of them have gained length which is helping.”
Alexandria Maris had a solid outing by firing a 162 (80-82) to pace Sholund’s crew. The junior finished 20th overall out of 38 golfers. After a slows start, Betsy Schroeder finished with a 163 (85-78) to take 24th.
“Alexandria had a strong tournament and her game is coming together right now,” said Sholund. “When she learns to avoid the big hole, her numbers will match how she is playing. With a gained confidence and additional power, she is poised for good things.
“Betsy did not have the start she is capable of or that she wanted but came back in the second round with a strong score despite a triple. That displays her maturity and veteran leadership on the course. She has led our squad in qualifying and has played really well. “
Rachel Blauert turned in a 171 (82-89). Other scores for Huntington included Alayna Steely (91-98–189), Katie Springer (99-102–201), Lexy Turpchinoff (98-103–201) and Eve Emery (98-108–206)
“They have worked hard on their games this summer and we will benefit from their efforts,” said Sholund. “I know they will see much improvement as we focus as a team on the areas of need. I’m excited for this group, they have good chemistry and a lot of potential.”
Taylor won the Battle at Brookwood with a 593 followed by Saint Francis (601), Indiana Wesleyan (620), Spring Arbor (645), Mount Vernon (654), Indiana Wesleyan B (669) and HU (685).
Huntington is back in action September 6-7 for the Players Club Invitational in Yorktown, Ind.
