WOMEN’S TENNIS

This past week HU women’s tennis coach Roger Ferguson reached a significant milestone in his coaching career. On Wednesday his team polished off Spring Arbor in its season opener to give the Forester skipper his 100th career win.

Ferguson was hired in 2009 to pull double duty as the men’s and women’s head coach. He spent two years coaching both squads before focusing on just the women’s team.

During his tenure as the men’s coach, he racked up 17 wins. In his second season with the men’s squad, he led the Foresters to the NAIA National Tournament as the conference champions and for his efforts was voted the league’s 2010 Coach of the Year.

At the conclusion of last year, Ferguson’s win total on the women’s side stood at 82 to bring his total wins as a Forester coach to 99 – nicely setting up his century mark milestone earlier this week.

Ferguson has built a tradition of winning. Over the last four seasons, his teams have averaged over 12 wins per year and finished third in the conference in each of those years. To date, his players have earned 20 All-Conference badges.

“Coach Ferguson does a great job with our women’s program,” said HU athletic director Lori Culler. “His teams are always competitive so it’s no surprise to see him reach this milestone.

“We’re looking forward to many more victories to come.”
