WOMEN’S SOCCER

The HU women’s soccer team stretched its win streak to three by blanking Governors State University, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at King Stadium. The W marks the Foresters’ first shutout of the season as they improve to 3-1 on the year.

Huntington wasted little time taking control of the contest. Jordan Adam got her team on the board less than nine minutes in when she crossed over into the middle and lobbed a shot over the outstretched hands of GSU keeper Gaby Smola.

HU remained on the offensive the rest of the way with the real pay-off coming in the final stanza. The pressure finally got to the Jaguars as the hosts ripped off three goals within a ten-minute span starting in the 61st minute to put the game out of reach.

Courtney McKown elevated above a defender to score on a header for goal number two. For the sophomore midfielder, it’s her third straight game she’s scored in. Her career goals stand at eight. On a give and go by Adam, Bailey O’Dell got in on the action when she one-touched a blast upper 90 from outside the box for the 3-0 lead.

At the 70:32 mark and less than 30 seconds after entering the contest, freshman Mapuana Stephens chipped in a shot from the top of the box on a nifty pass from Mikala Avina for her first collegiate goal and the game’s final score.

Ashtyn Patrick did her part too by assisting Huntington’s first two goals to make for a well-balanced Forester attack. HU struck for 30 shots, 20 of which were on frame, while limiting their visitors to just two shots on the afternoon.

Sophomore Maddy Moan earned the win in net before Addalyn Brown came in on relief for the final 12 minutes. Both keepers picked up a save in the shutout.

“This team continues to improve,” noted Coach Lewis. “We’re starting to work the ball around very well as a unit. Defensively we did a nice job of shutting down Governors State.”

The Foresters road trip to Aquinas on Friday with kick-off slated for 7:00 p.m.
