WOMEN’S SOCCER

The HU women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season Wednesday afternoon with an impressive 3-1 win over the University of Michigan-Dearborn. It was the second road match within a 24-hour period as the Foresters improve to 1-1-0 on the year.

Maddy Moan went the distance in goal to pick up her first collegiate win. The sophomore keeper tracked down four saves. As the team, the Foresters limited their hosts to nine shots on the day.

Most of the day’s activity happened at the other end of the pitch where Coach Lewis’ squad posted 19 shots, ten of which were on the mark, three of which found back netting.

The game’s opening goal came at the foot of sophomore Avery Giguere in the 9th minute on a corner kick when she pounced on a ball that a defender had blocked off the line. The goal was Huntington’s first of the season and Giguere’s first as a Forester.

Two minutes later, Giguere was at it again. This time the Wauseon native sent a pass to Hannah Williams who took care of the rest. With just the keeper to beat, Williams struck a beautifully placed ball into the lower right corner to double her team’s score at 2-0. The lead would stick through the first period.

The Wolverines would get one back just over seven minutes into the second half, but HU wasn’t having it. This time Courtney McKown and Ashtyn Patrick teamed up to stretch the lead back two when McKown ran in on Patrick’s chip shot over the UMD defense to slide it past the keeper for a picture perfect play. For McKown, HU’s returning leading scorer, it was her sixth career goal.

3-1 proved the final score and Coach Lewis’ first W as the HU skipper. “This was a good team effort and we showed improvement today.

“Our midfield did a great job highlighted by the play of our center mids, Avery Giguere and Bailey O’Dell, and our outside mids, Ashtyn Patrick and Trinity Burdick. Hannah Williams also played well on both sides of the ball and finished a nice scoring opportunity.”

The Foresters hit the road again on August 28 to face IU Kokomo at 7:00 p.m.
