SOFTBALL

The HU softball team became Marian’s latest victim Saturday afternoon by suffering a 9-0 loss to the #2 Knights. The W preserves MU’s perfect record as they move to 47-0 on the year, 35-0 in Crossroads League action.

On both sides of the ball, the Knights lived up to their No.2 billing. Marian got on the board in the fourth for a 2-0 lead and then poured it on in the fifth with seven runs to put into the effect the mercy rule.

NAIA All-American Breena Smith made sure HU never got much generated offensively. The Marian ace limited Gower’s crew to just three hits while working eight strikeouts to cut the contest two innings short. The shutout is MU’s 20th of the year.

Paige Eichelberger, Jada Crofoot and Sophia Beachy were the lone Foresters to log a hit for the hosts.

Meghan Fretz took the loss for HU. She spent 4.1 innings in the circle and gave up eight hits, nine runs, seven of which were earned, and three walks while striking out four.

Two innings into the nightcap, the game was called due to rain. It will not be made up as HU drops to 17-30 overall, 13-22 in league play. Today’s play marks the end of the regular season. The CL tournament starts on Wednesday where HU will be the 7th seed.

Before the start of game one, Marty Harris and Reed Jahnke were honored as the two Forester seniors.
