Running in their own invitational over the weekend, the Forester men’s track and field team kept the title at home while the HU women took second. For the men, it was their second straight win as they captured the Grizzly Invitational last weekend.
Highlighting the Huntington men’s side was junior Adrien Gentie who broke the school record in the 1500 meters by clocking in at 3:58.03, over nine seconds faster than his closest competitor on Saturday. Gentie took down David Luce’s record dating back to 1987 and became just the third Forester to run a sub-four minute 1500. He also earned points in the 800 meters by finishing third in 1:59.76.
HU racked up four other first place finishes on the day. Peyton Depriest won the 400 meters in 50.15. Depriest also had a solid outing in the 200 meters where he posted a time of 22.57 good for second place.
The Foresters dominated the hurdles with Cameron Worsham winning the 110 meter hurdles in 15.74 and CJ Robertson claiming the top spot in the 400 meter hurdles in 58.19.
Heath Atkins claimed his team’s only win in field events with his leap of 6.36 meters in long jump.
Other top three finishes for HU included Avniel Barrow in the 100 meters (2nd, 10.96), Andrew Zachary in the 400 meters (2nd, 50.46), Elijah Chesterman in the 800 meters (2nd, 1:58.57), Aaron Hendryx in the 1500 meters (3rd, 4:11.84) and the 3,000 meters (2nd, 9:27.94), Nick Childs in the 3,000 meters (3rd, 9:30.28), Justin Edwards in the 110 meter hurdles (3rd, 16.36), Graham Johnson in the 400 meter hurdles (3rd, 59.83), Adam Woods in pole vault (3rd, 3.50 meters) and the 4×400 meter relay team (2nd, 3:26.53).
HU won the meet with 187 points followed by Grace (172), Hope (151) and Saint Francis (70).
Molly Mitchell claimed the Forester women’s only win of the afternoon by topping the field in the 400 meters. Her time of 59.54 is the seventh fastest time in program history. With just a short break in between, she then toed the line in the 800 meters where she took second in 2:25.60.
Brooke Saylor turned in a pair of PRs in javelin (35.14 meters) and shot put (11.58 meters) to take second in both events and claim the 7th and 8th spot in the HU record books respectively.
Olivia Von Gunten picked up a pair of third place finishes in the 800 meters (2:30.34) and 1500 meters (5:16.13).
Other top three finishes for the Foresters included Tayia Meadows in the 100 meters (2nd, 12.96), Jessica Chojnacki in the 400 meters (3rd, 1:01.75), Saige Norris in the 1500 meters (2nd, 5:11.11), Mara McFarland in the 400 meter hurdles (3rd, 1:11.48), the 4×400 meter relay team (3rd, 4:16.05), Alyssabeth Cottle in pole vault (2nd, 2.91 meters), Emily Hubby in pole vault (3rd, 2.61 meters), Holly Holton in discus (3rd, 35.80 meters) and Emily Wellsand in hammer (3rd, 35.03 meters).
Hope ran away with the women’s title with 245 points followed by HU (161), Saint Francis (119) and Grace (67).
Next up for Child’s crew is the Indiana Little State Championships at Indiana Wesleyan on April 20.
