It was a double win for the HU track and field teams as both the men and women brought home the Grizzly Invitational title on Saturday at the H. Dean Evans ’51 Track and Field Complex on the campus of Franklin College.
On the men’s side, Avniel Barrow was a double winner in the 100 meters (11.20) and 200 meters (23.02) in addition to anchoring the winning 4 x 100 M relay team. He along with Andrew Zachary, Heath Atkins and Cameron Worsham combined to run a 43.22.
The Foresters also claimed six other first place finishes. Adrien Gentie won the 3,000 meters by clocking in at 9:01.26, the second fastest time in school history. CJ Robertson also landed a spot in the HU record books by claiming the No. 10 spot in the 800 meters in a winning time of 1:57.50. He teamed up with Josiah Sovine, Elijah Chesterman and Aaron Hendryx to win the 4 x 400 M relay in 3:30.33.
Zach Williams was the main point-getter in field events. The junior thrower won discus with his PR mark of 40.34 meters. He also posted personal bests in hammer (41.44 meters) and shot put (12.55 meters) to finish second in both events.
Cameron Worsham and Heath Atkins were the other two Foresters to register a first place finish. Worsham ran a PR 15.56 in the 110 M hurdles while Atkins’ win came in long jump (6.35 meters).
Other top three finishers for Childs’ crew included Zachary in the 200 meters (2nd, 23.23) and 400 meters (2nd, 50.90*PR), Atkins in the 200 meters (3rd, 23.53), Gentie in the 800 meters (2nd, 1:58.20), Hendryx in the 3,000 meters (2nd, 9:27.28), Graham Johnson in the 400 M hurdles (2nd, 1:00.00*PR), Justin Edwards in the 400 M hurdles (3rd, 1:05.00*PR), Adam Woods in pole vault (2nd, 3.65 meters) and Connor Nash in pole vault (3rd, 3.65 meters).
HU ran away with the title with 109 points followed by Mount St. Joseph (66), Franklin (33), UNAT (24), Purdue Running Club (20) and IU Running Club (18).
The Forester women brought home seven first place finishes on their way to the top. In field event action, Holly Holton (36.67 meters) and Brooke Saylor (33.26 meters) won the discus and javelin respectively. For both, their mark was a PR and proved a top ten finish in school history. Saylor also posted a PR in shot put with her toss of 10.93 meters which was good for second place.
Molly Mitchell won the mile in 5:27.88, Saige Norris claimed the top spot in the 3,000 meters in 11:25.10 and Tayia Meadows ran a PR 13.18 to win the 100 meters. Meadows also sprinted her way to second place in the 200 meters in 29.09.
Two relay teams rounded out Huntington’s blue ribbons. Meadows, Emily Hubby, Jordan Adams and McFarland made up the winning 4 x 100 M relay team that clocked in at 53.72. The 4 x 400 M relay team of Mitchell, MacFarland, Jessica Chojnacki and Olivia Von Gunten posted a winning time of 4:13.28.
Other top three finishes included Adams in the 400 meters (2nd, 1:03.40), MacFarland in the 800 meters (2nd, 2:30.30*PR), Rachael Smelser in the 800 meters (3rd, 2:41.00), Chojnacki in the mile (2nd, 5:37.17) Erin Manchess in the 3,000 meters (3rd, 12:01.28), Alyssabeth Cottle in pole vault (3rd, 9-11.25*PR) and Madison Hoover in long jump (2nd, 4.19 meters).
The Foresters scored 86 points followed by Mount St. Joseph (82), Franklin (49), Purdue Running Club (18) and UNAT (10).
HU is back in action next weekend to host their own invitational on Saturday.
