WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Huntington University junior Sarah Fryman was voted one of the top five women’s basketball players in the league as announced by the Crossroads League earlier today.

A third teamer last season, the 5-9 forward earned First Team All-Conference accolades this year having averaged a team-leading 17.9 points per game, the second best in the league, in addition to posting 4.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals each night.

Fryman drained 88.2 percent of her freebies to top the league in free throw percentage and claim the fourth spot nationally. Among her league peers, she also ranks 5th in steals per game, 6th in field goal percentage (.461) and 9th in stellar points (30).

Senior Brooke Saylor’s name also appears in the Crossroads League postseason awards as a member of the Third Team All-Conference. The Marion native (Eastbrook HS) did a little bit of everything for Coach Culler this season by averaging 9.5 points, a team-best 9.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, a team-leading 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals.

The 5-11 forward corralled 274 rebounds on the year to boast the second best rebounding average in the conference in addition to ranking third in offensive rebounds per game (2.9) and fourth in defensive rebounds per game (6.2). In the CL, she also holds 2nd in blocks per game, 3rd in stellar rebounds (17), 4th in double doubles (11), 10th in assists per game, 15th in assist/TO ratio (1.44) and 15th in steals per game.

Sophomore Sam Hammel (Anderson, Ind., Pendleton Heights HS) rounds out the list of Huntington honorees as an Honorable Mention All-Conference pick. In addition to running HU’s offense as point guard, she also tossed in 10.1 points per night in addition to grabbing 5.5 rebounds and leading the team in assists (4.0) and steals (2.3).

Hammel’s play in the CL is well-documented as evidenced by ranking 2nd in steals per game, 4th in assists per game, 4th in offensive rebounds per game (2.5), 9th in free throw percentage (.700), 10th in rebounds per game and 11th in assist/TO ratio (1.52).

Huntington finished the year with an overall record of 18-12.
