WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
A huge third quarter propelled the #RV Huntington women’s basketball team to a 67-53 win over Goshen College (8-19, 1-14) Wednesday night at Platt Arena. It marked HU’s fourth straight win over the Maple Leafs as Culler’s crew improves to 16-10 overall, 9-6 in CL action.
After poor shooting in the first half, the Foresters finally took control of the contest in the third behind their playmaker Sarah Fryman. The 5-9 forward accounted for 12 of her team’s 22 points in the quarter while Maddie Richer and Casey Morton each dropped in five points. At the other end of the floor, HU made it miserable for the Maple Leafs who managed just six points in the ten-minute segment.
What was a one-point difference favoring the visitors, 30-29, at the midway point, turned into 51-36 disparity by the end of the third. HU kept rolling as Jade Clement knocked down a ten-footer early in the fourth and then followed that up with a long ball after which Fryman scored back-to-back buckets to extend the lead to 60-39 with just over seven minutes remaining.
“That’s all she wrote” after that as the Foresters cruised to the 14-point victory and their tenth double-digit win of the season.
While HU shot just 33.3 percent from the field in the opening twenty minutes, their saving grace was committing just three turnovers in the half. They finished with a season-low seven TOs for the game while forcing their visitors into 25 miscues. Huntington would go on to drain half their shots in the second half to finish 41.4 percent (24-for-58) for the game which included going 9-for-15 from deep.
Fryman finished with a game-best 25 points to go along with a game-high three assists. Richer netted 13 points and pulled down a team-high four rebounds. Morton came off the bench to add ten points and three rebounds.
Mariah Roe and Alyson Prigge led the Maple Leafs with 15 and ten points respectively.
With four regular season games remaining, Huntington is tied for fourth with Grace in the league standings. Two games behind Indiana Wesleyan, the Foresters are chasing the #16 Wildcats for the third spot. They will go head-to-head with IWU on Saturday at Luckey Arena. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
