The Huntington track and field team got an early start to their indoor season by competing in the Mastodon Open hosted by Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday where several Foresters turned in quality performances including three new school records.

Senior Aspen Dirr, having just finished 19th at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships a few weeks ago, broke the program record in the mile by clocking in with a winning time of 5:13.61 to shatter the previous record by five seconds. She also won the 800 meters in a personal best 2:26.28.

Molly Mitchell earned points for HU in two events by placing 2nd in the 600 meters in 1:41.33. Her time is the 5th fastest time in Forester history. She also ran to a 4th place finish in the 800 meters in 2:36.21.

Alyssabeth Cottle tied her PR in pole vault with a leap of 9-6.25 for 2nd place. Making her collegiate debut, Emily Hubby finished 3rd with her mark of 8-6.50, good for the 8th spot in the HU record books.

Holly Holton had the best performance of her career in weight throw with a toss 38-6.25 to finish 4th at the meet and move up a spot into 8th in the history books. Saige Norris rounded out HU’s scoring by crossing the line in 5:38.41 in the mile which proves the fastest mile time of a freshman Forester and earned her 2nd on the day.

Indiana Tech won the women’s title with 43 points followed by Wayne State (27), HU (23), Purdue Fort Wayne (22), Xavier (OH) (15.5), Defiance (12) and Taylor (10).

On the men’s side, CJ Robertson established a new school record of 1:24.57 in the 600 meters good for 3rd place in the meet.

Peyton Depriest also earned in the top spot in the HU record books by winning the 300 meters in 36.35. Andrew Zachary was on his heels to finish 2nd in 36.47.

Elijah Chesterman ran a PR in the 800 meters to finish 2nd in 2:01.16 while Robertson took 3rd in 2:06.65.

Aaron Hendryx earned two points for Huntington in the mile by finishing 5th in 4:34.75. The Foresters also earned three points in the 4×400 meter relay by taking 2nd in 3:37.29.

In field events, Luke Fillers moved up two spots in the pole vault record books with a PR 13-5.50 for 2nd place while Heath Atkins’ leap of 19-10 in long jump earned him 6th place.

The men’s squad from Indiana Tech claimed the win with 61 points followed by HU (24), IUPUI (19), Xavier (OH) (14), Defiance (3.5) and Taylor (0.5).

Childs and crew won’t compete again until the new year. They are slated to head back to Purdue Fort Wayne for the Fort Wayne Duals on January 19.
