WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

A case of the shooting woes plagued the #24 HU women’s basketball team Tuesday night on the road at #RV Saint Francis. The Foresters shot a season-low 28.8 percent from the field to suffer a 68-47 loss to the Cougars (6-4, 1-1).

Culler’s crew entered the contest ranked 6th in the nation in free throw percentage (.795), 17th in field goal percentage (.442) and 19th in 3-point field goal percentage (.348) but couldn’t seem to buy a bucket at Hutzell Athletic Center on this given night.

Huntington converted just 15 of their 52 shots which included going 1-for-17 from downtown. HU also struggled from the line by going 16-for-23 for 69.6 percent. The Cougars, on the other hand, knocked down 12 triples, five more than their season average, at a season-high clip of 50.0 percent. They also made good on ten of their 12 free throw attempts for an above average performance at the charity stripe.

It was the perfect storm to make for the Foresters’ worse loss of the season. The middle two quarters did Huntington in as they managed just 14 points to USF’s 30. After playing within a point of their hosts in the first quarter, 13-12, HU went stone cold to score just six points in the second quarter to dig themselves in a 32-18 hole by the midway point.

The Foresters scored six points from the line but tallied just one field goal in the third as their shooting woes continued. The lid finally came off in the fourth but the Cougars put together their best quarter too. Saint Francis knocked down five triples in the last ten minutes and missed just four shots to outscore HU 25-21 to cruise to the lopsided win.

Sarah Fryman posted 14 points to lead HU. Sam Hammel added ten points and snared a team-best five rebounds.

Sidney Crowe had a career night by pouring in 25 points which included going a perfect 6-for-6 from long range. Lauren McBryar finished with 11 points. Kara Gerka and Savannah Buck each registered nine points and seven boards.

HU (7-3, 0-2) will look to regroup by Saturday when they road trip to Mount Vernon.
