MEN’S SOCCER

The Forester men’s soccer team took one on the chin Wednesday afternoon by being blanked 3-0 at Mount Vernon. HU entered the match averaging over two goals per night but lately it’s been a bit more lean as they’ve come up empty twice in the last three outings.

Shots were nearly equal with Mount Vernon tallying 14 to HU’s 12. In the second half, the Cougars cashed in on three of those shots for back netting to make for the lopsided affair.

MVNU’s first goal came 20 minutes into the second half. They struck again in the 80th minute for a little breathing room and then put the game out of reach four minutes later to secure a share of the fourth spot in the league standings. Mount Vernon is 7-6-3 overall, 2-3-2 in league play.

With two regular season games remaining, Huntington (8-5-3) still clings to the third spot in the CL standings with a league record of 3-2-2.

The Foresters finished with eight corner kicks to MVNU’s three. Gabe Greenfield took the loss in net collecting three saves along the way.

“This was a disappointing performance,” said Coach Lawson. “We just had too many guys with off nights. We didn’t have a response to Mount Vernon’s pressure. They did a nice job and certainly deserved this win.

“One thing we know is that in the Crossroad League if you don’t bring it, you get punished and that’s what happened to us tonight. No excuses. I have to be better. Players have to be better. And we will be against Taylor on Saturday.”

Lawson’s crew hosts the Trojans at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
