BOWLING
The Huntington University bowling teams kicked off their season over the weekend with the Boilermaker Classic. Heading into the year with high expectations, the Foresters got off to a great start to live up to that billing.
“Overall, we had a good weekend,” said Coach Shockey. “The shot at this tournament is traditionally really hard and this year was not an exception.”
Paced by Brianna Cearbaugh, the HU women claimed fifth with 6,809 pins out of 14 teams. The Fort Wayne native finished fourth as an individual with a 191.4 average to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. As a team, Huntington scored a total of 4,280 points on Saturday. They followed up Saturday’s five regular games by posting 2,529 pins in their 16 Baker games.
The Forester JV women’s team had a great outing as well to bring home a runner-up finish. Sitting in third with 3,866 pins after Saturday, HU had a lot of ground to make up as they found themselves 95 pins out of second place. Baker play served them well as they shot a 2,635 to cruise into second place – 46 pins over third once all the dust had settled.
“The ladies team had a good weekend,” said Shockey. “This is a tough tournament and we learned what we need to work on. We also saw the potential of what we will be able to do.”
On the men’s side, the Foresters knocked down 7,055 pins for the weekend for a 13th place finish out of 18 teams. Saturday saw HU score 4,240 for the five traditional games and then on Sunday they added 2,815 pins after Baker play. Justin Coleman led Shockey’s crew by finishing 15th individually.
The JV men collected 6,913 pins on the weekend to take sixth out of 13 teams. Their five-game total was 4,253 on Saturday after which they scored a 2,660 on Baker play on Sunday.
“It wasn’t the finish the guys were expecting, but this is the first tournament of a long season,” said Shockey. “The guys will bounce back strong next weekend.”
Next up for the Foresters is their first tournament as a member of the WHAC conference. They will compete in Southfield (MI) on October 6 as part of the WHAC Jamboree #1.
